Noise complaints rose 4.6% last year

Noise complaints in Macau rose by 4.6% in 2024, totaling 10,554 cases.

However, only 104 of these complaints resulted in prosecutions and fines, accounting for less than 1% of the total.

The Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) reported that nearly 40% of complaints were related to noise in public spaces, particularly in tourist hotspots like the Ruins of St. Paul’s, Senado Square, and leisure areas in the San Kio and Patane neighborhoods.

According to data from DSPA and the Public Security Police (PSP), the increase in noise complaints reflects growing concerns among both residents and visitors.

Of the total complaints, 39% were linked to noise in public spaces, while about 30% were due to domestic noise and pets.

The DSPA also noted a decline in complaints related to daily activities, industry, commerce, and construction, indicating that recent awareness campaigns on noise regulations may be having a positive effect.

In 2024, DSPA reported that 10,450 of the 10,554 complaints were resolved. Of the remaining cases, 104 proceeded to prosecution, representing 0.98% of the total.

Breakdown of complaints revealed that 7,274 were related to social noise, resulting in 85 accusations. There were 1,491 complaints concerning noise from industry, commerce, or services, leading to seven fines.

Additionally, 504 complaints came from construction and repair work in residential buildings, while 505 complaints involved construction equipment.

Eight cases from these two categories remain pending. Air conditioning and ventilation systems accounted for 416 complaints, with eight fines issued, and 167 complaints were linked to shows and entertainment activities. Staff Reporter
