Elderly woman dies after falling at ID sports event

The elderly woman who has been comatose in hospital after an accident at the sports authorities’ event last month passed away over the weekend, according to the Judiciary Police.
The 63-year-old, who was hospitalized for 20 days after the fall, passed away on Saturday at 2.15 p.m. at the public hospital. The exact cause of death will be announced after an autopsy.
During the “2015 Macao Elderly Sports Day”, a sporting function at the Tap Seac Pavilion on September 20, the elderly woman lost her balance and fell down a staircase during a melee where a crowd of seniors were scrambling for prizes on the building’s second floor, according to her son, who appeared on the news earlier this month asking for assistance in the police probe.
Devastated by the tragic accident, he accused the authorities of failing to deploy sufficient safety personnel for the activity, as well as criticizing the organizer for not contacting the police immediately after the incident. He told media that the investigators admitted to him that they had faced difficulties in gathering evidence several days after the incident.
The Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Alexis Tam, also commented on the case, saying that he has issued instructions for the Macau Sport Development Board (ID) to improve safety measures when organizing sports events.  AU
