Africa Cup of Nations | CAF fines Equatorial Guinea over fan violence

African soccer’s ruling body CAF said it fined Equatorial Guinea USD100,000 after fans disrupted its match against Ghana yesterday.
Equatorial Guinea, which is hosting the Africa Cup of Nations, lost 3-0 in the semifinals to the Black Stars in Malabo. Play was halted eight minutes from the end because of people throwing items onto the field. Riot police had to escort players from the field.
Equatorial Guinea stepped in as host in November after Morocco dropped out over concerns about the spread of the Ebola virus. Today Morocco was banned from the next two tournaments and fined $1 million, as well as 8 million euros ($9.1 million) in damages to the CAF, the group said on Twitter.
At least 36 people were injured in the Ghana match, with 14 taken to the hospital for further investigations and one case requiring close monitoring, CAF said in a statement on its website.
The fine is “for aggressive behavior and being repeat offenders,” CAF said. The host must also cover the cost of treating the injured. It will have to play its next match without spectators if there are any incidents at its third-place match against the Democratic Republic of Congo for tomorrow.
