The Portuguese government has appointed Alexandre Leitão as the new consul general of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong, replacing Paulo Cunha Alves who has occupied the post since October 2018. Leitão started his diplomatic career in 1999. He was consul general of Portugal in Benguela (September 2008 to September 2012), and was posted at the Portuguese Embassy in Senegal (from July 2002 to August 2005), according to media reports. For the last three years he has been vice-president of the organizing committee of the United Nations Ocean Conference, which took place in Lisbon from June 27 to July 1 this year. He is currently the special envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Climate Affairs. He is fluent in English, Spanish and French.
