Business performance ‘better than expected’

Restaurants and similar establishments performed better than expected in September 2017 as business conditions improved, according to data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

The interviewed businesses reported higher year-on-year revenue growth in September than August, and were optimistic about their business prospects in October.

Among the interviewed restaurants and similar establishments, 45 percent registered a year-on-year rise in receipts, up 12 percentage points from August.

The corresponding shares of Local-Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (39 percent) and Japanese & Korean Restaurants (56 percent) rose by 20 and 13 percentage points, respectively.

The proportion of establishments recording a year-on-year decline in receipts declined to 37 percent, down by 9 percentage points from August.

In the retail sector, the proportion of retailers reporting a year-on-year sales increase in September 2017 went up by 10 percentage points from August to 51 percent. Leather goods retailers in particular showed a year-on-year rise in September sales.

Retailers were more optimistic about their business prospects in October, with 33 percent predicting a year- on-year sales increase, up by 8 percentage points from September.

Among the types of retailers, 56 percent of the Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers and 44 percent of the Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers expected a year-on-year sales rise in October – up by 33 and 24 percentage points, respectively, from September.

Some 67 percent of Motor Vehicle Retailers and 44 percent of Department Stores expected a year-on-year growth in sales.

23 percent of the retailers surveyed anticipated a year-on-year decline in sales, down by 10 percentage points from September.

The corresponding proportions of Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (22 percent), Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers (11 percent) and Adults’ Clothing Retailers (15 percent) dropped by 18, 17 and 15 percentage points, respectively, while Department Stores (33 percent) grew by 11 percentage points.
