the buzz: Population tops 620,000 in Q2, fewer marriages

The MSAR’s total population reached 624,000 at the end of June 2014, marking an increase of  9,500 quarter-to-quarter due to growth of non-resident workers. The female population totaled 316,800, accounting for 50.8 percent of the total, data from the Statistics Bureau (DSEC) shows. There were 1,666 live births delivered in the second quarter of 2014, an increase of 29 (1.8 percent) quarter-to-quarter.
There were 473 mortalities, having dropped by 76 cases quarter-to-quarter; the top three underlying causes of death were Neoplasms (157 cases), Diseases of the Circulatory System (116 cases) and Diseases of the Respiratory System (85 cases). In the second quarter of 2014, 788 Chinese immigrants arrived, 13 fewer than in the previous quarter. Non-resident workers numbered 155,310 at the end of the second quarter, an increase of 9,618 compared with the previous quarter. 945 marriage registrations were recorded in the second quarter, 222 fewer than the previous quarter.
