Cheong U | UM Taipa campus to be a public sports facility

The Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Cheong U, has said that the Macau government is looking into converting the sports center at the University of Macau’s (UM) Taipa campus into a community sports facility.
Mr Cheong spoke to the media on the sidelines of the Macau Youth Summit yesterday and claimed that one of the possible directions in the discussion regarding the future of UM’s Taipa campus was to restructure the sports center and open it to the public.
He said that the government is discussing the feasibility and the benefits of adding two to three more floors to the building, which currently only has a ground level structure. The Secretary stressed that no conclusion has been reached yet.
Moreover, Cheong U stated that some of the university faculties are still in the process of moving to the Hengqin campus. As a result, he does not want to make an abrupt decision on the future of the old site, which will add pressure to the relocation process. He also reiterated that the campus would not be used for commercial purposes in the future. JPL
