In welcoming the Chinese New Year, MGM Macau’s Volunteer Team showed its commitment to serving the community by calling in nearly 130 volunteers, together with members of senior management, to carry out household cleaning yesterday for 160 live-alone elderly households.
MGM Macau has been working closely with Centro de Dia Brilho da Vida, a Caritas elderly service center, for the fourth consecutive year on assisting in household cleaning. The number of volunteers involved has increased annually from 60 in the first year to 130 this year, and the number of households doubled from 80 to 160 in the past four years.
After the cleanup, the team helped to put up “Fai Chun” (red banners) for the elderly and gave them a New Year gift – a custom designed MGM shopping trolley with a goodie bag consisting a bottle of cooking oil, personal care products, instant bird’s nest and dried food.
Chief Executive Officer & Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, Mr. Grant R. Bowie, said: “Since its inception in 2010, the MGM volunteer team has been organizing various community activities in the hope that the elderly can experience the community’s care towards them through these activities…”
Sands China care ambassadors carry out annual spring cleaning for the elderly
On Sunday, a total of 90 Sands China Care Ambassadors (SCCA) volunteered to help brighten the homes of local elderly people who live alone. The senior citizens are users of the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance program, which is supported by Sands China. This is the sixth consecutive year the spring cleaning initiative has been held, and it is now firmly an annual tradition prior to Chinese New Year. In addition to cleaning, SCCA volunteers delivered gifts to the residents and one volunteer hairdresser even provided a free haircut service to some residents.
Early Sunday morning, 90 Ambassadors armed with brooms and other cleaning tools visited 25 households where they spent hours sweeping, vacuuming and scrubbing the homes. When they had finished, they sat down for a friendly chat with the occupants, with an ambassador offering free haircuts too. Each resident was also given a gift pack which contained useful staples such as rice, oil, grain and noodles.
In association with the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance program, operated by The General Union for Neighbourhood Associations, Sands China has supported the initiative since 2010, having contributed over MOP 1.1 million to the program to date and benefitting more than 1,330 elderly people. Since 2010, SCCA volunteers have participated in home visits and spring cleaning among other services.
