CRIME | Man accused of sexually abusing own children

A 41-year-old Portuguese man has been arrested following charges of alleged child abuse. The man has been accused of sexually abusing his young children, a nine-year-old boy and a seven-
year-old girl.
The man was detained last week after the mother of the victims reported the alleged abuse to the police. A judge ordered his pre-trial detention.
According to reports, the suspect initiated the abuse as early as 2011, also the year in which he divorced his wife. After spending time alone with the father, the children exhibited signs of distress to their mother. She then referred the victims to a psychologist who raised the possibility of the abuse.
The Education and Youth Affairs Bureau has reacted to the case expressing “shock” and condemnation. The bureau added that it “will provide all necessary assistance to the children and the family.”
