The construction of reclamation zone A and the artificial island for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge (Delta Bridge) have made the already busy Outer Harbor area more bustling.
Macau Daily pointed out that there have already been three accidents in the water where construction vessels collided with each other.
It suggested that the accidents – which involved construction vessels, fishing boats and sand carriers – were mainly caused by construction vessels that neglected to observe the safety regulations of the fast boat channel.
Although these accidents did not cause major damage, they are signs of the rising danger of the increasingly hectic maritime traffic in that area.
The authorities have signaled that they will continue to provide the most up-to-date traffic conditions to all vessels that travel to the nearby area, including sailing instructions and maps.
Nevertheless, they pointed out that some construction vessels do not have a proper sense of safety and did not strictly observe the regulations when travelling in Macau’s waters. Some smaller boats have even entered construction areas to fish, which has added extra risk.
The authorities have vowed to launch regular and random operations to tackle vessels that violate sailing regulations.
