Employment holds steady as retail trade sees modest growth

The Wholesale & Retail Trade sector employed 68,554 people, maintaining stability compared to the same period in 2023, according to data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Within this sector, Retail Trade saw a slight increase of 133 employees (+0.3%), reaching 43,621. Employment in other surveyed industries also rose, with Transport, Storage & Communications adding 597 workers (+4.1%) to reach 15,110 employees.

Security Activities and Public Sewage & Refuse Disposal Activities saw increases of 165 (+1.3%) and 14 (+1.5%), respectively.

Wage trends varied across industries. Average earnings, excluding irregular remuneration, increased in all sectors except Wholesale & Retail Trade. Security Activities recorded an average salary of MOP14,090, up 6.7% year-on-year.

Transport, Storage & Communications saw wages rise to MOP22,440 (+2.6%), while Public Sewage & Refuse Disposal Activities increased to MOP19,790 (+0.9%). However, salaries in Wholesale & Retail Trade edged down by 0.1% to MOP14,730.

Job vacancies in Retail Trade fell to 1,591, down 829 from the previous year, signaling a slowdown in hiring demand.

Meanwhile, Transport, Storage & Communications reported 835 vacancies, an increase of 56, with rising turnover and vacancy rates indicating ongoing labor shortages in the sector. Staff Reporter
