Fourth largest destination for Norwegian aid to Africa

Mozambique in 2014 was the fourth largest recipient of development aid provided by Norway in a group of 20 African countries, with an estimated total of 375.9 million Norwegian Kroner (USD46.3 million), reported Mozambican daily newspaper Correio da Manhã.
The newspaper, citing the annual report of the Norwegian Embassy in Mozambique, added that the list of 20 African countries is led by neighboring Malawi, with 531.9 million Norwegian Kroner, followed by Tanzania and Somalia.
Between 2009 and 2014 Mozambique received around 2.5 billion Norwegian Kroner (US$308 million) from Norway for several socio-economic projects, especially focused on Education, Energy, Health and support for the state budget.
In an analysis of Mozambique’s performance the Norwegian Embassy report stated that, despite the strong economic growth of the country for at least the last ten years (average of 7 percent per year), this “has done little to reduce poverty.”
The report mentions, however, improvements in Mozambique such as in public financial management, particularly revenues, foreign aid, payment transactions, wage disbursement, procurement and external auditing, as well as to transparency of public financial management.
Norway is a major player in the development of power transmission line between Mozambique and Malawi, financed by the World Bank, the implementation of which is, however, at a standstill due to disagreements between the two countries.  MDT/Macauhub
