Gov’t unwilling to revise Land Law

The Secretary for Administration and Justice, Sonia Chan, said last Saturday that, without an evaluation of the legislation, the government is not considering a review of the existing Land Law. The secretary recalled that the current law only recently came into force in March 2014.
Asked to comment on topic as it relates to the “Pearl Horizon” case, Sonia Chan stressed that, “Considering the legal framework of the Land Law and other legislation, the government has already taken a decision on the case, and in the short term has no plans to revise the Land Law.”
The secretary reiterated, “The government will follow the current law on this and other potential cases of land lease expiration.”
However, Ms Chan said that the administration is open to cooperating, in case the legislators at the Legislative Assembly decide to present a project for revising the law.
Questioned on the possibility of some lawmakers being in the process of preparing a project for a legal review, lawmaker Fong Chi Keong admitted that issuing a proposal to change the law is a possibility, since several other legislators are of the same opinion.
