Guangdong reports new incident at nuclear power plant

The Guangdong nuclear emergency committee issued a notice to the Unitary Police Service (SPU) about an operational incident at the Daya Bay nuclear power plant on Monday, according to a statement released by the SPU.

A unit short-circuited and automatically shut down when one of the plant’s vapor generator protection systems was activated, it was reported.

According to the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale, which is measured over seven levels, the incident was classified as ‘Below Scale’, or ‘Level 0’.

The ‘Level 0’ status indicates that there were no injuries, as well as no instances of environmental damage or safety violations.

Earlier this month, Guangdong issued a notice to Macau regarding another ‘Level 0’ incident at Yangjiang nuclear power plant Unit 1. During a planned maintenance session on March 6, staff accidentally triggered an alarm in the monitoring system while clearing a system blockage. The system was immediately overridden to prevent confusion.
