Health | Surgical team at public hospital win award

The surgical team of the Conde de São Januário Hospital Center (CHCSJ) has been awarded the Medical Excellence Award from the Dr Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation. The prize is for the breakthrough in the use of the laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) surgical technique, the Health Bureau (SSM) informed in a statement.
The award ceremony was held in the presence of representatives from the medical team and service.
During this opportunity, the SSM expressed its commitment to continuing to promote the development of specialized medical technology in Macau, introducing advanced clinical technologies and equipment to further improve the quality of medical services and the health and wellbeing of residents.
LESS is a revolutionary technology in the field of laparoscopy that aims to reduce the trauma to patients caused by surgery as well as accelerating the recovery time and alleviating pain caused by surgical treatment, the benefits of which have been highly recognized by the medical community.
The public hospital introduced this technique back in 2003 for laparoscopic biopsy surgery and from then on has applied it to different areas, including oncology, gastroenterology, gynecology, and pediatrics.
In recent years, the team has used the LESS in a wide range of surgeries, particularly those related to cancer treatments and gastric surgeries.
According to the SSM records, the technique was used in the pediatric field on patients as young as three months old with success.
Currently, over 70% of general surgery at CHCSJ is performed laparoscopically and over 500 surgeries have been performed using LESS. Patients who have undergone LESS have recovered well after their operations, and these results have been recognized by patients, their families, and the health sector.
The SSM also said that presently, over 70% of surgeons in the General Surgery Service of CHCSJ possess knowledge and experience with the LESS technique, including 12 surgeons who can independently operate using this technology. RM
