Hundreds of Catholic devotees take part in procession

Several hundred Catholic devotees took part in a solemn procession yesterday that commenced from the Cathedral and finished at St. Augustine’s Church.

The two-day novena started on Saturday, which followed the form of the “Way of the Cross,” recalling the passion and death of Jesus.

The procession – Procession of the Passion of Our Lord, the God Jesus – is a local version of a global annual religious celebration that can be traced back to at least the 18th century.

During the weekend, the procession was escorted through the narrow streets by guardians in magenta robes.

A number of traffic enforcers were deployed in the streets yesterday as devotees passed through a few of the city’s busy streets including Rua do Campo, Leal Senado and Avenida de Praia Grande, amongst others.

Macau’s Bishop Stephen Lee was also seen taking part in the parade. 

The annual procession takes place every first Saturday and Sunday of Lent, and it is participated by the Bishop of the Diocese of Macao, the clergy members Catholic devotees,

They are usually accompanied by the Public Security Police Force Music Band playing the funeral march as they walk through the streets.

The procession is one of the city’ biggest religious events. LV
