IC new vice-president inaugurated

The new vice president of the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), Chan Kai Chon, took the oath of office yesterday in a ceremony presided over by the president of the bureau, Mok Ian Ian.

At the inauguration ceremony, Chan thanked the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Alexis Tam, and leaders of the IC for their trust and support, and for giving him the opportunity to perform new duties in the cultural sector of Macau.

Chan added that he will fully assist Mok Ian Ian and work together with his colleagues of the Bureau, making every effort for self-improvement and meeting challenges with wisdom and humility.

Chan Kai Chon had served as director of the Macao Museum of Art since 2017. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics at Jinan University, a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts at the Nanjing Normal University and a PhD at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 1992, he worked in the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau and served as the head of the Division of Continuing Education of this Bureau from 1994 to 2003.

According to a statement issued by the IC, during his tenure as director of the Macao Museum of Art, Chan devoted himself to promoting the development of visual arts and museums and planning various annual art exhibitions. As the bureau’s vice president, he will have the task of supervising the works in the areas of exhibitions and museums, cultural and creative industries and arts education, and carrying out the mission of promoting culture and the arts.

Regarding the leadership of the Macao Museum of Art (MAM), Mok Ian Ian told journalists on the sidelines of the event that an acting director would fill the position temporarily. “The MAM is also an organizational subunit under the tutelage of Vice President Chan Kai Chon. For the time being we will look into the people currently performing duties at MAM to replace him. For now, the person that would perform such duties would be Loi Weng I [Dora Loi Weng],” Mok confirmed.
