Lawmakers propose 29 percent cap for rent updates

The Legislative Assembly (AL) standing committee currently undertaking an article-by-article discussion of a law that introduces a rental control mechanism is proposing that the rent updates could be as much as 29 percent higher. In November, the AL approved a joint proposal by nine of its lawmakers to establish the mechanism, alongside an arbitration center for rent-related disputes. The law establishes that rent updates are required to be based on a coefficient approved by the Chief Executive. The president of the AL’s Third Standing Committee, Cheang Chi Keong, said that the coefficient should be three times the legal interest rate. According to him, there is no contradiction between this proposal and the intention of the nine lawmakers, which was to establish a cap in order rationalize rental prices in Macau.

Criteria to establish ‘brain death’ established

The rules to assess whether an individual is in a state of “brain death” were established by a dispatch published this week in the Official Gazette. The dispatch follows the recommendation of the ethics committee for medical issues. It is being seen as a historical landmark for the promotion of organ donation in Macau.
