Macao Foundation commits RMB1.1billion to UM’s Hengqin campus

The Macao Foundation has signed an agreement with the University of Macau (UM) to provide over RMB1.1 billion for land acquisition in Hengqin, intended for the university’s new campus.

This funding commitment follows UM’s recent announcement to invest MO946 million in the same initiative.

The land spans roughly 375,600 square meters and will feature a complex with an architectural area of 710,000 square meters.

A government statement highlighted the foundation’s long-standing support for higher education in Macau, tracing back to the university’s origins as the University of East Asia.

UM plans to establish new faculties focused on medicine, information technology, engineering, and design at the Hengqin site.

Rector Song Yonghua indicated that these developments aim to increase student enrollment to at least 25,000, with over half pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees.

The new campus is projected to be operational by 2028.

Additionally, in October, UM established a new company with a registered capital of RMB50,000, with Song appointed as chair of its board of directors.

Earlier this year, the Zhuhai UM Institute of Science and Technology has received more than 150 government-funded science and technology projects.

These include 96 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, 11 key projects and projects of the National Ministry of Science and Technology, six other national projects, and 43 provincial and municipal scientific research projects. Staff Reporter
