Macao Orchestra inaugurates its 2018-19 Concert Season

The Macao Orchestra (OM) held the opening ceremony for their 2018-19 Concert Season on Saturday in the lobby of the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium, followed by the season’s opening concert “Sergei Rachmaninoff by Barry Douglas”. In celebration of OM’s 35th anniversary, this year’s Concert Season is themed “Music Gala 35: Music Fills the City.” Under the baton of OM’s Music Director Lu Jia, pianist Barry Douglas, winner of the gold medal at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in 1986, was invited to perform at the opening concert. Following his last performance with the Macao Orchestra in which he played Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, in this concert, Douglas performed Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1. The concert program also featured Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. In addition, OM organized a “Piano Master Class with Barry Douglas” before the concert, in which Douglas coached and exchanged insights with the participants. A pre-concert talk led by Lu Jia was also held, allowing the audience to understand the scheduled musical pieces better. University of Macau offers condolences for Prof Mirrlees

Professor James Mirrlees, Honorary Professor from the University of Macau (UM) and a Nobel Laureate in economics, has passed away in Cambridge, United Kingdom at the age of 82. In a statement released on Friday, UM offered its condolences on the passing of Professor Mirrlees and said that the academic will be remembered by the institution. Professor Mirrlees was a pioneer of the economics of imperfect information, with his work laying the methodological foundations for the modern approach to decision-making under imperfect and asymmetric information. UM conferred the title of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa and Honorary Professor on Professor Mirrlees in 2004 for his exceptional contributions to the field of economics.
