Macau receives 4.9m package tour visitors

In the first half of 2019, Macau received a total of 4.9 million package tour visitors, representing growth of 14.9% year-on-year.

At the same time, outbound residents using travel agency services grew 8.3% to 828,000 in the first half-year, while those traveling under their own arrangements grew 13.5% to 560,000.

Visitors on package tours numbered 779,000 for June 2019, according to data released yesterday by the Statistics and Census Service, 15.2% more than a year earlier.

The growth was mainly driven by visitors from mainland China (602,000), which grew by 16.9% year-on-year in June. However, package tour visitors from Hong Kong surged 49.8% in the same period to 14,000, while those from South Korea (53,000) and Taiwan (59,000) rose 14.4% and 1.3% respectively.

Meanwhile, outbound residents using the services of travel agencies totaled 142,000 in June, growing 16.1% year-on-year, while those traveling under their own arrangements increased 17.3% to approximately 100,000.

At the end of June 2019, there were 119 hotels and guesthouses operating in the Macau SAR, three more than in June 2018. The number of guest rooms edged up 0.1% year-on-year to 39,000, with five-star hotel rooms holding steady at about 25,000, or about 63% of the total. DB
