Man defrauds friend of HK15 million over casino debt

A Macau resident has been apprehended by the police on suspicion of defrauding a friend from mainland China of approximately HKD15 million. The suspect, who is 41 years old and reportedly employed in the financial industry, allegedly deceived the victim by falsely promising to invest the funds in a casino for redemption purposes.

The incident took place in January of this year, when the suspect convinced the mainland man to invest HKD2 million, assuring him of a monthly profit of MOP50,000. The victim transferred the amount through a bank account and subsequently received a profit of RMB125,000. Encouraged by the suspect, the victim decided to increase the investment and transferred an additional HKD13 million.

However, after no updates were provided, the victim became suspicious and reported the case as a suspected fraud. On Wednesday, the police apprehended the suspect at Hengqin Port. During questioning, the suspect confessed to the crime and revealed that he had collaborated with two other individuals to deceive the victim. Staff Reporter
