Mozambique | World Bank grants new loan for paving roads

The World Bank has approved additional financing of US$73.6 million to support the implementation of the second phase of the program for Maintenance and Management of Roads and Bridges of the government of Mozambique, according to a statement sent to Macauhub.
This third tranche of additional funding for the Management and Maintenance of Roads and Bridges Program fills a funding gap for repairing roads damaged in southern Gaza province after successive floods in the Limpopo River basin in 2013.
“The damage caused to the road network by repeated flooding isolates many rural communities, preventing their access to basic services, markets and transport,” said Mark Lundell, director of the World Bank for Mozambique, Madagascar, Mauritius, the Seychelles and Comoros.
Most of Gaza province’s roads are located in the lower area of ​​the Limpopo River basin and are prone to flooding, and over 70 percent of the road network of the province, about 2,200 kilometers, suffered damage in the 2013 floods.
The government of Mozambique has estimated that the repair of the road network would cost about US$183 million and in December 2013 the World Bank provided additional funding of US$70.15 million.  MDT/Macauhub
