Guangdong, Macau and Hong Kong have implemented a cooperation protocol seeking to jointly address air pollution issues in the Pearl River Delta region.
The agreement features joint efforts to create an air quality monitoring platform; the exchange of information on regional air quality; and cooperation on research projects related to environmental protection.
Guangdong and Hong Kong will extend its air quality monitoring network, while Taipa’s monitoring station has officially joined the air quality monitoring network of the Pearl River Delta, hoping to increase coverage in the region.
Hong Kong will add one more monitoring station in addition to its current three, while Guangdong province will increase its number of monitoring stations from 13 to 18.
In a statement, Macau’s Environmental Protection Bureau claimed that information on air quality will be provided in a more detailed manner. Data on air quality will be provided in real time, with the monitoring network releasing information on air pollutant concentrations hourly.
The monitoring network will also update the air quality health index of the three regions every 24 hours. In Hong Kong, the air quality health index will be released hourly. The bureau also said that air-monitoring results for the region will continue to be published annually.
“The implementation of a regional air quality monitoring network is a treasured result of cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau regarding environmental protection,” the bureau said.
The Air Quality Monitoring Network of the Pearl River Delta Region now covers three territories with 23 monitoring stations.
