New music director recruited for Macau’s orchestras

The new private entity that will manage Macau’s two orchestras is set to recruit a new music director, according to the new Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) president, Leong Wai Man, as cited by TDM Radio.

According to the new official who replaced Mok Ian Ian, Macao Orchestra (OM) and the Macao Chinese Orchestra could “perform better and look for staff with a more suitable fit” under the new arrangement.

The two orchestras are still publicly owned but will be managed by a private entity.

The official revealed that the musicians of the two orchestras will be transferred to the new entity.

Lu Jia, who headed the orchestra from 2008, is said to have left Macau.

The IC has allegedly abruptly laid off musicians from the two orchestras, which caused the bureau to compensate its musicians up to MOP250,000.

The IC previously noted to the Times that in a bid to achieve its long-
term sustainable development, the two orchestras will operate as a public enterprise in the future. LV
