Over 1,400 people sign petition to save street animals

A petition urging the Macau SAR government to stop euthanizing street dogs and cats has been signed by more than 1,400 people, according to Change.org.

Started by Fátima Galvão and supported by 10 local animal caring associations, the petition is called “Stop the Cruel Catch and Kill Policy! Make Macau an Animal Friendly City!”

The initiator condemned the Macau government’s measures in handling stray animals.

“Macau is densely populated by humans – so, to control the population of stray animals, the Government catches dogs and cats and takes them to the municipal kennel. They are given 10 working days before a few are put up for adoption on a time limit – if they are not adopted or classed as ‘unadoptable’ (which is most of them), they can be euthanized,” the petition reads.

“It’s time to find a better way to control the population other than just catching and killing while the dogs and cats continue to breed,”  Galvão wrote.

“Macau must implement a TNR scheme to control the population of stray dogs and cats, [and] stop the import of dogs and cats for selling in pet shops,” the initiator proposes, referring to the Trap-Neuter-Release program in other jurisdictions. JZ
