The Office for Personal Data Protection (GPDP) released its annual report regarding last year’s work activities on Friday.

The number of personal data protection cases initiated in 2017 reached 217, a slight decrease compared with the previous year (224). Moreover, the report shows that 68.2 percent of the investigations involved private entities. The total number of cases dealt with by the privacy watchdog (including cases left pending from 2016 and later concluded) reached 408 cases, 187 of which have been concluded.

The department issued penalties to 4.3 percent of the cases concluded and also made suggestions for improvement to the parties subject to complaints in 17.6 percent of the cases concluded.

A total of 1,944 inquiries related to personal data protection issues have been received by the GPDP, with queries related to the “legitimacy of treatment of personal data” topping the list of concerns. Eighty-six percent of the inquiries were made by phone.

Yang Chongwei, coordinator of GPDP, said in the introduction of the report that he believed that 2017 would be a year of “transition and innovation,” given the Macau government’s aim to develop Macau into a “smart city.”
