Inside The G2E Asia Global Gaming ExpoAt the end of the second quarter of 2014, the gaming sector had 57,550 workers, up by 3.5 percent year-on-year, among which 25,783 were dealers. According to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) Survey on Manpower Needs and Wages for the second quarter of the year, full-time gaming sector workers earned an average of MOP20,160 in June 2014 (excluding bonuses and allowances, and also junket promoters and junket associates), up by 6.7 pct year-on-
year, with dealers earning MOP17,530 on average.
At the end of the second quarter, the sector had 1,529 vacancies, down by 62 year-
on-year; of these, vacant posts for dealers fell significantly by 319 places.
In terms of language skills, besides Cantonese, 85.5 pct and 72.1 pct of the vacancies in the sector required knowledge of Mandarin and English respectively; the respective rate in retail trade was 85.5 pct and 62.4 pct.
According to the survey released yesterday by DSEC, a total of 3,124 new employees were hired by gaming operators during the second quarter of this year. That means that, according to DSEC’s survey, the employee recruitment rate (5.5 pct) increased by 0.8 percentage points year-on-year, while the job vacancy rate (2.6 pct) decreased by 0.2 percentage points, indicating that some of the vacancies have been filled.
Besides gaming, the survey covers other industries, namely the following: wholesale and retail trade; transport, storage and communications; security activities; and public sewage and refuse disposal activities.
The wholesale and retail trade sector employed a total of 48,717, up by 14.2 percent year-on-year, with 30,859 working in retail trade. In June, the average earnings of full-time employees rose by 6.7 pct year-on-year to MOP11,800.
In respect to the transport, storage and communications sector, the average earnings of the 9,483 full-time employees surveyed rose by 11.6 percent year-on-year to MOP19,200.
A total of 6,592 persons were engaged in security activities, up by 23.7 pct year-on-year. Average earnings of full-time employees rose by 11.8 pct year-on-year to MOP9,770 in June.
Public sewage and refuse disposal activities employed 723 workers, down by 1.2 pct year-on-year. Average earnings of full-time employees also increased in June by 4.7 pct year-on-year to MOP14,780.
In regards to vocational training in the surveyed industries, a total of 36,568 participants attended training courses in the second quarter of the year. The gaming sector had the largest number of participants (17,328), and most of them (50.9 pct) attended courses in “Gaming and Entertainment Services”; security activities had 8,519 participants, with 34.3 pct attending courses in “Services”.
