Statistics | Motor vehicle numbers exceed 240k, traffic accidents increase

1 traffic MacauThe number of traffic accidents had increased 6.3 percent year-on-year by the end of 2014. Data released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) shows that the number of traffic accidents totaled 16,029, resulting in 14 deaths and 5,424 cases of injury.
The total number of licensed motor vehicles reached 240,107, up by 5.3 percent year-on-year. Motorcycles and light private cars accounted for 52 percent and 41.3 percent of the total number of vehicles respectively.
DSEC said that cross-border vehicle traffic reached 4,940,238 vehicle trips last year, up by 6.1 percent year-­on-year.
The Macau International Airport recorded 48,193 commercial flights, representing an increase of 7.3 percent year-­on-year. Flights to and from mainland China and Taiwan accounted for 39.2 percent and 24.5 percent of flights respectively. Flights between Macau and Vietnam soared by 245.1 percent and those operating between Macau and South Korea increased by 52.8 percent. However, flights to and from Malaysia and Thailand decreased by 17.9 percent and 11.7 percent respectively.
Helicopter flights between Macau and Hong Kong, and between Macau and mainland China, totaled 15,161 – a decrease of 12.3 percent compared to the previous year.
Inward cargo (6,672 tons) and outward air cargo (16,343 tons) increased by 3.7 percent and 8.8 percent respectively year-on-year. DSEC said in a statement that Taiwan remained the major origin and destination of inward and outward air cargo, accounting for 55.1 percent and 44.1 percent of the respective totals. Transit air cargo soared by 15.8 percent year-on-year.
DSEC revealed also that by the end of 2014, the number of land line telephone users decreased by 3 percent year-­on-year, whereas the number of mobile phone users increased by 7.8 percent, reaching 1,856,453 users. The number of households subscribed to internet services totaled 305,394, and the cumulative duration of usage reached 953 million hours last year, up by 17 percent year-on-year.
