Survey finds 68 pct of employees never get promoted

A Macau Management Association (MMA) survey has found that 68.4 percent of the respondents to a survey have never been promoted. The situation is even worse in the gaming industry.
In the MMA Survey on Macau Residents Occupation Mobility published recently, 37 percent of the 1,013 respondents have been holding their current position for less than three years. This shows that employees in Macau are considerably mobile. It also found that while 68 percent of those surveyed have never been promoted, the number is even higher for employees working in the gaming, marketing and public relations industries, as well as employees in civil organizations, exceeding 80 percent.
On the other hand, more than 60 percent of the respondents from the conference and exhibition industry, public sector, banks and medical service industry claimed that they had been promoted at least once.
Moreover, the survey found that more than 30 percent of those working for media advertisement, bank and civil organizations indicated that they are planning to change jobs within a year. This is in stark contrast to the seven percent of workers in the human resources, construction, and conference and exhibition industry.
MMA suggested that, judging from their findings, the mobility in Macau’s job market is not very low. Concerning the low number of promotions, it claimed that the matter is more likely associated with the structure of the specific industry. The gaming industry, for example, requires many workers to fill low ranking positions.
