Taipa Market neighbors worried about refurbishment

The ongoing expansion work of the Taipa Market may be behind schedule, local Chinese newspaper Macao Daily has reported.

The expansion is intended to add hawker space at the central podium on the ground floor, as well as an air conditioning system, elevator and accessible facilities. The work commenced in July last year.

When the expansion work completes, the total floor area of the market will be expanded from 614 square meters to 926 square meters. The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has expected works to conclude in November this year.

On the other hand, the government also expected that works at the central podium, including the addition of a ceiling, would be finished next month.

However, journalists from the newspaper have seen otherwise. There was no sign of a ceiling at the podium. Some tenants told the newspaper that the expansion for hawkers was still nowhere to be seen.

Airflow within the market building was reportedly poor. Even though fans have been installed, the airflow barely improved as certain windows on the first floor were blocked.

Tenants hope the government can closely monitor the progress of the refurbishment. Staff reporter
