Two relatives of UM staff member hospitalized

Two family members of a University of Macau (UM) member of staff from Hubei province were feeling unwell on the evening of January 27 and were taken to the hospital around 9 p.m., the authorities reported. The two relatives had earlier traveled from Wuhan to Macau.

They were fetched by the Fire Services Bureau from their residence in a postgraduate house on the UM campus and were delivered to Conde S. Januário Hospital.

After medical examination, both of them were found to be fine, with one of them being diagnosed with cholecystitis. Both of them have returned to the UM postgraduate house to rest.

In the meantime, according to a statement release by UM, the school has implemented various precautionary measures, which include enhancing education about epidemics, enhancing hygiene practices on campus such as cleaning, and providing guidance for faculty, students and staff.

Starting Monday, visitors from Hubei Province – and visitors that have been to Hubei Province within the previous 14 days – have been denied permission to enter Macau unless they present a valid health certificate confirming they were free of infection from the novel coronavirus.

Such a certificate should be issued by medical authorities recognized by Macau. The Health Bureau would, if it required, verify such certification with the appropriate institutions.

Such measure is applicable for Macau’s non-local workers from Hubei. According to the local government’s explanation, non-local workers from Hubei must submit a medical proof while entering Macau if these workers need to travel between Macau and Zhuhai frequently.
