UM students accuse media of defaming professor

Fifty-two students from the University of Macau (UM) issued a joint statement yesterday, alleging some members of the local media of defaming the head of the UM department of government and public administration, Professor Wang Jianwei. The students wrote in the statement that they are “very angry” about the issue. The statement criticized some of the local media for attacking the professor before the result of the investigation had been published, and without giving any substantial evidence. Wang Jianwei has previously admitted that he has been subjected to two sexual harassment complaints. He claimed that some members of the local media were trying to pressure the university by naming him in their reports, which he argues is politically motivated.

PSP to strengthen interaction with media

At a dinner with the media yesterday, Commissioner Leong Man Cheong of the Public Security Police (PSP) expressed his wishes for strengthened interaction between police and media outlets. “The PSP and the media have developed a cooperative relationship as we’ve jointly faced the opportunities and challenges in the process,” he stated. “We have changed our [way of communication] from the previously unilateral [information] release to interaction. We will continue to answer the [inquiries of our friends in the media] in an efficient and professional manner,” Leong added.

GDI chief announces resignation

The coordinator of the Infrastructure Development Office (GDI), Chan Hon Kit has resigned from his position, citing health reasons. TDM Radio reported that Mr Chan has taken leave from the office for several months. Before the new coordinator is appointed, the assistant coordinator Chau Vai Man will be in charge of the office. Chan Hon Kit has been the GDI chief since November 2007, after leaving the deputy directorship of the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau. Similar to the current DSSOPT director Li Canfeng, Chan had testified in the Ao Man Long trial. The GDI chief drew criticism after contradicting his previous statement given to the Public Prosecution Office. A judge stated that his testimony was questionable and pointed out that it is a felony to give false testimony.
