UNESCO to review association’s letter on ‘hill-sea-city’ landscape

UNESCO has acknowledged the New Macau Association’s (ANM) letter about the state of conservation, following the proposal to raise the height limit of buildings in Nam Van Lake Zone C, stating that it will verify the contents of the letter in consultation with the State Party of China.
UNESCO’s Culture Sector for the World Heritage Center also said that it will request comments in line with the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention.
“The information will also be reviewed by the World Heritage Centre and the Advisory Bodies to the World Heritage Committee in the preparation of a working document for the extended 44th session of the World Heritage Committee to be held in June/July 2021 in Fuzhou, China,” said Mechtild Rössler, director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Heritage Division.
“In this context, the World Heritage Centre has already been in close contact with China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration regarding the state of conservation of this property in accordance with decisions made by the World Heritage Committee,” the letter read.
In a statement issued yesterday by the pro-democrat association, ANM said that it hopes UNESCO could better monitor the conservation of the World Heritage property in Macau, especially with the push for the drafting and implementation of the Protection and Management Plan of the Historic Centre of Macao.
ANM previously suggested that the historic and cultural “hill-sea-city” landscape between Colina da Penha and the Old Bridge could be protected by legal means. LV
