Unified telecom license scheme underway

Head of the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau Derby Lau revealed that preparation for a new telecom-licensing scheme that will issue unified telecom licenses is underway.

The licenses are intended for providers of communication facilities and related services, depending on the services that these industries or companies provide.

Speaking on the sidelines of a press conference organized by CTM, Lau noted that there is currently no concrete timetable due to several changes to the proposed licensing scheme and to the telecommunication outline law.

Authorities are also seeking to promote 5G telecommunication services and will follow the timetable for launching services in neighboring areas.

As mainland China, Japan and South Korea are rapidly developing their 5G services, Lau estimated that Macau will launch 5G networks between 2019 and 2020, depending on the development of the city’s telecom industry. LV
