Visitor numbers exceed gov’t expectations as arrivals reach 30 million

Visitor arrivals have exceeded 30 million this year, surpassing last year’s total of 28.25 million. The average daily visitor count has reached around 95,000, reflecting a significant year-on-year increase of 27% and recovering to approximately 87% of the pre-pandemic levels seen in 2019, according to the Public Security Police (PSP).

The data also shows that the figures are at 90% of this year’s target.

Mainland visitors make up the majority, accounting for 70% of total arrivals and showing a robust year-on-year growth of 33%. In comparison, visitors from Hong Kong represent 21%, with a slight increase of 0.5%. Visitors from Taiwan have surged 73%, making up 2% of arrivals, while other international visitors constitute 7%, reflecting an impressive year-on-year increase of 83%.

In terms of entry points, the Border Gate saw 39% of these arrivals, followed by the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge at 25%, Hengqin Port at 12%, and the airport at 9%.

PSP noted a steady rise in inbound travelers this year, supported by efficient customs clearance processes across various control points.

With several major events planned for November, including the highly anticipated Grand Prix, authorities expect high clearance throughput throughout the month. The Grand Prix is projected to attract over 400,000 visitors, with hotel occupancy rates likely to exceed 90%.

This forecast aligns closely with visitor numbers from the second weekend of last year’s prix.

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), expressed confidence in a significant influx of visitors during the Grand Prix.

Various local associations are organizing themed activities to enhance the event’s appeal, while the six gaming operators are collaborating with the Grand Prix Museum to promote racing culture in Macau.

Ticket sales for the Grand Prix have been strong, with most tickets nearly sold out; however, between 200 and 300 tickets will be reserved each day for same-day sales to accommodate last-minute attendees. Staff Reporter
