Court rejects La Scala defendants’ appeals

The Court of Second Instance rejected the appeals of businessmen Joseph Lau and Steven Lo in the La Scala case. Lau and Lo were both sentenced to five years and three months’ imprisonment for allegedly bribing the former Secretary for Transport and Public Works Ao Man Long. No further appeals are possible, since decisions of the Court of Second Instance are final if the punishment is eight years’ imprisonment or less.

Worker dies on Cotai construction site

A 50-year old mainland Chinese worker died last Friday on a Sands China construction site. The Labor Affairs Bureau is investigating the death, which occurred after a metal frame came loose and its metal restraint broke, causing around three tons of frameworks to fall on the man. The worker lost consciousness immediately and was pronounced dead after emergency treatment at the hospital.
