DSAL suspends construction after worker dies on-site

A construction worker fell to his death on Friday morning when performing a routine check on a building at Avenida do Almirante Lacerda, the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) informed in a statement.

According to a DSAL,  “it is suspected that, at that moment [of the accident], the worker was carrying out surveillance works on the second floor […] when he reached the upper floor, the floor broke, leading the worker to fall from [a great] height.”

The DSAL has ordered the suspension of all works at the site while it investigates the accident and ensures that the site is safe for other workers.

The bureau emphasized that contractors “should observe all the appropriate working procedures” while carrying out demolition works at great heights, hinting that the accident might have been caused by failure to comply with safety regulations.

The DSAL expressed condolences to the victim’s family and said it will follow up on compensation for the accident.

It reaffirmed its commitment to raising awareness of occupational health and safety standards, and called on the construction sector to ensure that contractors provide employees with a safe working environment.
