Airport traffic continues to grow

2 IMG_0728Passenger volume at the Macau International Airport (MIA) surpassed 430,000 passengers in January, representing an increase of 3 percent. Over 4,700 aircraft movements were registered, representing a 6 pct increase compared with the same period last year.
According to a press release issued yesterday, Southeast Asian routes recorded the most significant growth (23 pct) and occupied 44 pct of the overall market. Meanwhile, the Taiwan and mainland China markets recorded slight declines. The airport argues that the fall “is mainly due to the effect of relevant policies of mainland China,” as well as the fact that the Lunar New Year was in January last year. Passenger traffic is expected to peak in February.
“Even with the slowdown of growth in the Macau gaming industry, the passenger traffic of MIA still maintains an upward trend so far, due to the attraction of the Macau tourism market, and the recently added Southeast Asian routes continue to provide support to the entire market,” the airport stressed. In the future, the airport’s management intends to “continue to monitor market trends, and further strengthen the development of international routes.”
