The University of Macau (UM) associate professor Bill Chou has confirmed that the university has decided not to renew his contract.
He told the media yesterday on the sidelines of the TDM Forum that UM informed him of the decision last Wednesday without disclosing the reason.
Bill Chou believes that his contract was not renewed due to his participation in social causes that are critical of the government. He said that he was warned by his friends of such an outcome in the past and was not surprised by the decision.
He also accused UM of not valuing education by revealing the decision two weeks before the beginning of the new semester.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Chui Sai On, the UM chancellor and chair of the university assembly, said that he respects the administration of UM and claimed that he has never interfered with its operations.
The Office of the Government Spokespersons has also released a statement, claiming that the government only heard the news yesterday through media reports. It also claimed that the government respects and defends academic freedom and does not interfere with the operation of local higher education institutions.
