New HKMAO deputy chief on the horizon

A new deputy chief for the State Council’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO) will be appointed in the next few weeks, when the incumbent HKMAO head Wang Guangya turns 65, which is the mandatory retirement age for ministers. According to the South China Morning Post, Wang Zhimin, who is currently the deputy director of the central government’s liaison office in charge of works related to youth in HK, will replace Xu Ze, who will turn 61 in October. A mainland official who is familiar with Hong Kong affairs told the HK newspaper that the current HKMAO director would remain in his position until the blueprint for the 2017 chief executive election in Hong Kong comes out this summer. The newspaper also quoted Chan Wing-kee, a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, who said that during the “critical moments of political reform,” the central government would not make changes to the leading post in charge of monitoring Hong Kong’s affairs.
