A luxury watch and jewelry show scheduled to take place at the Emperor Hotel on May 2 and May 3 was canceled by its Hong Kong organizer, as VIP customers will likely be deterred by China’s anti-graft campaign. Organizers of the “Europe Asian Watch Jewelry & Antique Coins Show” published a notice on the event’s website indicating that the cancelation was made “due to the recent political crisis in China of ‘fighting corruption’.” “We have no other alternative but to cancel this upcoming show in May,” the statement said, adding that the organizers shall reschedule future show dates.
Many give opinions on Fisherman’s Wharf plan
The authorities’ email inbox dedicated to opinions on the intended relaxation of planning conditions for the Fisherman’s Wharf was recently overloaded, breaking down during the recent public notice and consultation period. The Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSSOPT) confirmed that the two-week public notice has drawn such an dramatic response from the public that their opinions overloaded the email box. The malfunction caused the failure in delivery for approximately one hundred emails. The bureau said its computer system had recorded the email addresses of senders and has notified them to re-send their opinions.
Man assaulted with a stone, robbed
The Judiciary Police (PJ) last week successfully apprehended a mainland Chinese man, who assaulted another mainland male with a stone at the Comendador Ho Yin Garden before grabbing his bag which contained money and valuable items worth more than 600 thousand (the currency was not disclosed by the police). The arrested, a driver aged 39, was intercepted by the police authorities at the checkpoint when he revisited the city. Last December, the 39-year-old, who gambled away all his money at a local casino, reportedly injured the victim in the garden, having stalked him from the pawn shop he visited. However, according to the suspect, half of the 200 thousand he stole has already been spent paying off his debts and on gambling.
More local students apply for mainland universities
The annual joint entrance exam for mainland universities received a total of 720 candidates from Macau this year, representing a ten percent year-on-year increase in the number of Macau applicants. According to the Tertiary Education Services Office, the entrance exam is coordinated by the country’s Ministry of Education, open to overseas Chinese students as well as those from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The 2015 exam registration for the Macau area ended on March 31. Classified by category, 47.6 percent of the applicants applied for literary and history majors, whereas 52.4 percent of them applied for majors in science and engineering, agriculture and medicine.
HEALTH | Local senior confirmed to have tetanus infection
A local senior aged 82 years of age is on respiratory support for medical treatment in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, after being confirmed to have contracted tetanus from mainland China. On March 26, the elderly man was wounded when he alighted from a bus in the mainland. The wound on his palm deteriorated despite receiving multiple treatments at a Chinese health station and local major hospitals. Having shown signs of respiratory arrest on 9th of this month, the patient was sent to the hospital for further treatment, but remains in a stable condition. The health bureau has launched an inquiry into the matter.
EDUCATION | Rotaract Club organizes Goodwill Ambassador Program
The Rotaract Club of Macau has organized the 13th Goodwill Ambassador Program. According to a press release issued by the organizers, 28 candidates were divided into 7 groups to go on a series of competitions over the past three months, and were judged by a jury on April 11. The group “H2O” won this year, with its members crowned “Goodwill Ambassadors.” Led by Rotaract Club members, the group will embark on a nine-day cultural exchange trip in Australia. “The Goodwill Ambassador Program” aims to help young people develop and explore their personal goals and leadership skills, to pique the interest of youngsters to participate in community service, take part in inter-cultural exchanges and to enlighten them about “the spirit of Rotary” said the club in a statement.
