China’s WW II efforts show ‘tradition and patriotism’

Acting Chief Executive Wong Sio Chak said China’s efforts to protect its people from Japan during World War II were a sign of “tradition and patriotism.”
Replacing Chief Executive Chui Sai On, who led a 100-member delegation to Beijing to attend the massive military parade on Thursday, Mr Wong said that China’s stance today is not one of anger against Japan.
He presided over a commemorative ceremony in Macau’s Tap Seac Square to mark the 70th anniversary of China’s victory against Japan at the end of World War II.
Mr Wong said he hoped that younger generations would draw lessons from past wars so that history would not repeat itself, while acknowledging the stability and security of their current social environment.
He stressed that Macau had achieved unprecedented social economic development since its handover to China, successfully implementing the “one country, two systems” principle.
He concluded by urging the public to take advantage of development opportunities within the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road initiative to further develop the city.
A youth representative said during his speech that students should always remember the “selfless dedication of older generations and revolutionaries.”
A community representative added that the ceremony also showed that people still remembered the suffering and humiliation that they experienced during those difficult times. CP
