The Chinese are the foreigners from outside the European Union who spend most in Lisbon’s retail stores, beating Brazilians and above all Angolans, who for many years were the main buyers, a study by real estate consultant Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) has found.
The study cited by the Portuguese press took into account “tax free” sales to foreigners from outside the European Union who can then seek reimbursement of taxes on the purchases they made.
According to the document, the Chinese are responsible for 28.6 percent of the total amount spent, Brazilians for 26.7 percent and 24.5 percent for Angolans, with Russians in a distant fourth place with 4.6 percent.
The study gives only the amount spent, on average, in each of the five areas reviewed by JLL, namely: Avenida da Liberdade, Rua Castilho, Baixa, Chiado and Principe Real.
The shopping areas where foreigners spend the most money is Avenida da Liberdade, where the big luxury brands such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss and Gucci area located and where non-EU tourists spend an average of 871 euros. MDT/Macauhub
