Club D2 at Fisherman’s Wharf will close its doors at the end of this year, Portuguese language newspaper Hoje Macau reported, citing the owner of the venue, Francisco Coelho.
According to Coelho, the decision to finally close the club’s doors is the result of the Covid-19 pandemic and border control measures which have barred tourists from Macau.
“We decided to close after December 31,” Coelho said to Hoje Macau, noting that the possibility of a reopening in future is very uncertain.
Coelho noted that the club has suffered severe financial damage this year, after a shutdown period enforced by the government and long months with almost no clients.
For Coelho, rents play the most relevant role in the business and since “rents have not been lowered and I can’t see any positive sign that tourism will return next year, we are forced to close,” he explained.
The closure of the establishment will also mean around 30 non-resident workers of different nationalities will be let go.
Meanwhile, resident workers will be relocated to D3 club, another club under Coelho’s ownership which will remain open for now.
“The local workers will be relocated to D3, but non-resident workers will be left without a job. We have no other option as at the moment – it is not possible to transfer them from one to another workplace,” he said. RM
