Environment | Macau bans several types of waste paper

The Macau SAR government is banning the importation of several types of waste paper, according to a decree signed by Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng.
Yesterday, the government published the decree in the official gazette. According to the order, starting from today, several types of waste paper will not be allowed to enter Macau.
Not only is importing these papers prohibited, but the use of Macau for the transit of these materials and the re-export of waste paper will not be permitted.
Mainland China previously announced that it would implement a full import ban of foreign waste, including all types of waste paper, starting from 2021. Other places in Asia, including Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia, have also been progressively tightening their import controls on various types of waste paper.
According to a statement released by the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) yesterday, the local government has banned the import and re-import of waste paper in an attempt to refine Macau’s solid waste import management regime, to reduce the risks of environmental damage caused by imported or re-imported waste paper.
