The “Guide of the Portuguese Citizen in Macau” is a book that seeks to answer most of the questions raised by Portuguese national’s with an interest in Macau. As the lawyer Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, one of the promoters of the book, explained, the guide has a broad view of Macau citizenship and it is targeted mostly at two kinds of people: The first being “Portuguese citizens who live in Portugal or in any other country who want to come to Macau to live, to work, to do business, and so forth, and seek to know more about Macau, its procedures, bureaucracies, rights, among others”; and the second, “people from Macau, who have Portuguese citizenship but have a limited knowledge of Portugal, its laws and procedures and are interested to know more about that too.”
The guide was made with contributions from both Macau and Portuguese authors. It is a partnership between several organizations and companies, namely MdME Lawyers, Private Notary, MLGTS (Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados) and the Portuguese Consulate-
General in Macau. Many of the Frequently Asked Questions arose from questions asked at both the consulate and lawyers’ offices, as well as in the above-mentioned companies’ operations in the territory.
The tome’s first edition has printed 3,000 copies and was fully financed by the law firms. It has both Portuguese and Chinese language versions. It will be given to the Portuguese Consulate-General in Macau to be distributed free of cost. In the words of the firm’s representatives, “This book is part of the companies’ social responsibility.”
The book was launched on Friday in a ceremony held at the Consul-General’s official residence.
As explained by MdME partner Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, “This is a courtesy gift and also a way to thank Macau and our clients for the support that has allowed us to grow to be in January of 2016 the second biggest lawyers’ office in Macau with 18 lawyers”. The occasion also marked the 9th anniversary of the law firm. Renato Marques
