Heavy rains leave 50 dead

Three days of heavy rain in southern China have left 50 people dead and another 12 missing and destroyed thousands of homes, authorities said yesterday, as areas along the Yangtze River braced for more floods. Torrential rains caused the deaths of 27 people and left 12 missing since in central Hubei, while in Guizhou Province, the bodies of 23 people were found after a landslide on Friday. Rainstorms soak the southern part of China every year during the summer monsoons, but this rainy season has been particularly wet. The Yangtze River flood control headquarters has ordered local authorities to remain on high alert.

FIFA president talks China football reform

Chinese vice premier Liu Yandong, who met with FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Friday, said that China is pursuing reforms of its football industry, deepening the reform of system and mechanism, and expanding the school football system. According to Xinhua, Liu said that she hopes FIFA will provide assistance and guidance to China it its football reform, meanwhile the Chinese Football Association will actively support FIFA, and is willing to contribute to the global development of football. Xinhua also reported that Infantino said he regards football reform in China as favorable to the national development of the sport and the promotion of the industry.

236 suspects busted in football gambling

A total of 236 suspects in China were caught for illegal football gambling during the ongoing UEFA Euro 2016, China’s Ministry of Public Security said yesterday. More than RMB28 million (MOP33.7 million) was confiscated or frozen in cases involving overseas gambling websites, according to the MPS. Since June 14, police have busted several rings that organized gambling activities in cities including Shenyang in Liaoning Province and Shenzhen in Guangdong Province. According to the MPS, cracking down on cross-border web gambling has become a regular task for the police as international gambling companies have recruited Chinese agents to attract gamblers in recent years, reported Xinhua.
