Historical industries exhibition opens tomorrow

The Museum of Macau will hold the opening ceremony of a new exhibition showcasing Macau’s traditional handicraft industries tomorrow.

The exhibition, titled “The Memorable Time – The Traditional Handicraft Industries of Macau”, will run from October 28 until February 25, 2018 on the third floor of the Museum.

According to a statement from the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), the exhibition was organized to familiarize Macau residents with the city’s traditional industries and lifestyles.

For example, the statement describes Macau’s incense, firecracker and match industries as an important element of the city’s economy in the 1950s and 1960s.

Given their importance to local residents’ employment in these decades, these three industries are covered extensively in the exhibition, “to allow residents and tourists to reminisce [about] the past glorious years of Macau’s handicraft industries and [to] become aware of the evolution of society.”

Some 210 pieces and sets are exhibited across six zones, showcasing the development and decline of the industries.

“Although these industries are now in history, they gave an unsurpassable contribution to Macau’s historical development, highlighting the hard-working and indomitable spirit of Macau people,” the IC said in the statement.

In addition, the Museum of Macau will hold a number of parallel activities, including two guided tours on November 5 and 19, two thematic talks on November 11 and December 2, and a “firecracker making” workshop on November 18.
