The International Institute of Macau (IIM) has launched a series of activities aiming to promote Macau’s 20th handover anniversary worldwide, namely in the Macanese diaspora. These activities have been launched through its digital platforms over the past year.
The latest activities were launched on Monday evening through IIM’s Facebook and comprise of a new and extended version of the documentary film “Macau – A success story,” both versions of which were recently broadcast on a Cable TV network in Canada in both Cantonese and English.
According to information provided to the Times by the IIM, the first version of the film, which is shorter in Cantonese, debuted on Canadian TV on November 15. The extended English version which includes additional interviews with Florita Alves, Miguel de Senna Fernandes, and Joe Liu was broadcast on the January 3.
The documentary focuses on the cultural, touristic, economic, social, and architectural features of Macau, among others, that emerged in the first 20 years after the handover. It aims to present a clear picture of the state of progress and development of Macau to residents living abroad, aspects which they may not have had the chance to see in loco, especially over the last year as the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted tourism and travel.
The initiative was implemented through a collaboration with the “Club Amigu di Macau” in Toronto, Canada, and was supported by the sponsorship of the Macau Foundation.
Both versions of the documentary can be accessed on IIM digital platforms.
The newly launched extended version in English is presented and narrated by well-known local artist Giulio Acconci. It is presented as a series of short, themed videos which are about three minutes each.
The themes range from heritage to science, education to creative industries, and the environment and links to Portuguese-speaking countries. These themed videos were specifically prepared by the IIM to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the MSAR and have been uploaded to several social media platforms, including YouTube.
An exhibition of around 100 photographs displayed in several countries with the support of the Houses of Macao (Casas de Macau) abroad was also curated as part of the IIM’s broader initiative. The photo exhibition can now virtually visited or revisited through the IIM website (iimacau.org.mo) until August 20, 2021.
